How to find a childcare centre

Top tips for choosing the childcare that is right for you and your child

Firstly, go in with your top three non-negotiables, those aspects you insist a childcare centre can offer you and your family that you will not budge on.
You are trusting this place and the people in it to look after your most precious possession so you want to make sure you have made the right choice. Also, your baby, toddler or young child isn’t going to be able to go home and tell you what they did all day, so it is important you feel completely happy and comfortable leaving your child there.

The feel of the environment

  • When you walk in, what feeling do you get? Does it make you feel comfortable?

  • Is the environment welcoming?

  • Is your child comfortable in this new space?

  • Is the environment tidy and clean?

  • Does it smell nice?

Teaching team

  • Do all the team members greet you and your child and give you a warm and friendly smile?

  • Do the team members appear happy? Do they look like they want to be there?

  • How do the teachers present themselves? Are they clean and tidy, and do they look professional?

  • Do the teachers interact with your child?

  • How do the teachers interact with the children in their care? Are they loving, gentle, enthusiastic and energetic?

The children in the centre

  • Are there enough activities on offer for children to be engaged in?
